Some traditions die hard and it’s especially true when it involves delicious donuts!
Come out on Tuesday, Feb 13 at 6:30 for a selection of powdered or cinnamon sugar diamond shaped Fastnacht donuts and join those in attendance in singing your favorite hymns, praise or even camp songs.
Fastnacht is a celebration in parts of Germany where the household lard is used to fry up donuts on Shrove Tuesday, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, as a way to “cleanse” the household in preparation for the fasting during Lent. Haegele’s Family Bakery is the only German baker from Philly to D.C. who makes these authentic airy delights and it has been a tradition to offer them at Our Savior every Shrove Tuesday along with some form of entertainment. In years past it took on the form of a talent show with vaudeville-like acts. In other years trivia contests and karaoke nights were the main attraction. This year it will be as simple as the Fastnachts themselves, a night of singing various hymns and praise songs at the request of those in attendance. So after dinner, get in the car and come on over. Dessert is on us, and bring a friend if you can!
