Music at Our Savior Presents

Lessons and Carols And on Earth Peace Goodwill Towards All on Sunday, December 18th 2016 at 10:30am.

Music and readings will explore the themes of peace and love in the context of the Advent and Christmas seasons. This popular service will feature Adult, Youth, Children’s Choirs, orchestra, and organ including works by composers such as Antonio Vivaldi and Felix Mendelssohn. Hymns round out the service, including such classics as Hark the Herald Angels Sing and It Came Upon a Midnight Clear. Come experience the magic of the season with us.

Preparations are well under way for this year’s Lessons and Carols on December 18 at 10:30 am. I am thankful for the congregation’s support and enthusiasm for this meaningful service.

Over the past several years, we’ve had diverse themes, but none directly related to peace. Every year, the theme is selected in June or July. Usually Scripture readings for the upcoming Advent and Christmas seasons will inform the theme, but this year I felt so strongly about the peace theme that I went in that direction before consulting the passages for the season. Fortunately, the message of peace is woven in the Advent and Christmas readings. In the Christmas account in Luke 2, the angels tell the shepherds “Glory to God and on earth peace, goodwill towards all.” In one of the anthems during the service, the translation is “And on earth peace, goodwill towards men.” Based on those two pieces of information, I came up with the theme “And on Earth Peace, Goodwill Towards All.” While peace will be the focus, part of the readings and music will focus on love, as goodwill is a form of love.

Based on the theme, I chose several anthems for Adult, Youth, Children’s Choirs, orchestra, and organ. There will be several opportunities for everyone to sing and “Make a joyful noise” on the hymns such as Hark the Herald Angels Sing, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, and more. Finally there will also be Holy Communion and several readings including a mixture of Scripture and meaningful non-Biblical readings.

If you would like to sing with the choirs, there will be a rehearsal for adults on December 17 from 9 am – 12 pm. Children’s and Youth Choirs will be working on music for the service on November 27, December 4, and December 11. Contact Austen Wilson to RSVP.

Come experience the magic of the season at this service! See you on December 18 at 10:30 am! Please invite your friends and family, especially those without a church home
