National Youth Gathering
Lutheran Church of Our Savior,
I would like to thank our congregation for the gift of a life changing experience. A few weeks ago, I had the blessing of going to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas. Along with 30,000 other Lutherans, I got to see God’s grace in a new light and meet so many fellow Christians that are dedicated to service and learning. This trip was thanks to LCOS and without you I wouldn’t have had one of the best experiences of my life.
I hope that everyone has had a relaxing and memorable summer. This summer has been one that I will never forget. We kicked off the summer by attending the National Youth Gathering. Sophia Howard and myself were able to have a powerful 5 days in Houston, TX. While we were there we were able to beat the heat and enjoy getting to meet many people from the ELCA, as well as, help the people of Houston. For me the most powerful moment was at closing worship on Sunday. We had the opportunity to take Holy Communion with over 31,000 other people in the Texans Arena. I encourage you to find Sophia Howard and ask her about her experience. I want to thank everyone who supported us financially and through prayer. We are look- ing forward to going to another National Youth Gathering in three years in Minneapolis!
After Houston, it was time to get Vacation Bible School in full swing. This year our theme was Hero Central. The kids that attended were able to find their strength in God. Every day they learned what it took to be one of God’s Superheroes. We had 59 kids attend this year, 21 of them were from LCOS, and we had 32 volunteers! It was a great success this year, and I cannot wait to start thinking about next year, and how to continue to improve the experience for all the kids that attend. Always remember to “Do good, seek peace, and go after it!”
Now that we are getting back into the swing of school, please log onto the church website to register for Sunday School. We are still looking for teachers. If you are interested in teaching, please let me know. Rally Sunday is September 9th and this year will be very extra special because The Trozzo family will be joining us. If you don’t know who The Trozzo family is, they are the missionary family that the Sunday Church School supports with their noisy offering! Please come to church early on September 9th, to register for Sunday School, meet your teachers, and to say hi to The Trozzo family.
I hope to see all of you on September 9th and throughout the year! Please save the date, December 9th, which will be our annual Sunday School Christmas Pageant at 9:15 AM, with a pancake breakfast to follow!

Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA
Nearly four years ago, the ELCA launched its first comprehensive campaign, Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA, with the goal of raising $198 million in support of churchwide ministries across the United States and around the world. Now, as we enter the final year of this five-year effort, we look to the future of this church by highlight- ing the campaign’s Leadership priority, including the ELCA Fund for Leaders and Youth and Young Adults. Through these ministries, we are accompanying youth and young adults in their faith journeys and supporting talented, gifted seminarians as they prepare to begin a life of rostered ministry.
With the $4 million campaign goal for Youth and Young Adults, the ELCA will support new and growing youth leader- ship academies, camps, labs, and schools across the country; provide funding for leadership internships with Lutheran Services in America; and provide grants for collaborative and creative youth and young adult ministry initiatives.
How will this campaign affect LCOS youth and young adults? From June 27, 2018 to July 1, 2018, our Director of Youth and Family Ministry, Jaime Frazier, will accompany two youth from LCOS, Sophia Howard and Hailey Melcher, to the National Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas. Sponsored by the ELCA, the gathering will focus on the theme, “This Changes Everything” and hopes to help the youth become leaders in the church. The expected attendance is 30,000. Nadia Volz-Weber will address the crowd; the New Jersey Synod Bishop, Tracie Bartholomew, will meet with NJ youth; Houston will find service projects for 30,000 kids; representatives from seminaries will discuss their calling to ministry; and all participants will worship together and take communion.
Jaime, who grew up in LCOS, loved her Youth Group experiences here. After graduating from Immaculata University with a major in religion, she earned a master’s degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, concen- trating in Youth and Family Ministry. Jaime feels that “church is a welcoming place for youth, a second home” and wants to help them deepen their faith.
Pray for this life-changing ministry and consider a gift to the campaign. In this copy of The Messenger you will find an envelope which you may use to make your donation and return it to LCOS. We will forward donations to the ELCA campaign. Invest in our youth and young adults and the future of our church.
