LCOS Supports

Urban Promise College Students

Believing that one person, given the opportunity, can make a difference in the world, Our Savior’s Social Ministry Committee and Memorial Gifts Board have collaborated to provide scholarships totaling $8,000.00 per year to students actively involved with Urban Promise Ministries in Camden who are continuing their education beyond high school. Since 2009 sixteen students have been awarded scholarships. Recipients must be enrolled full-time in a university, college, or trade school and must maintain a minimum GPA. The scholarships are made possible through an endowment fund established with generous bequests by the families of Bernadine Plotzke and Jean Patterson.

Our Savior is currently sponsoring six students.

  • Derjanai Thomas: Coppin State University
  • Pierre Joseph: Albright College
  • Nioshjah (Nye) Lindsey: King University
  • Zaasia Morris: Rowan College at Gloucester County
  • Aniyah Robinson: Montclair State University
  • Taniah McDonald: Montclair State University

Meet three of these six young people in their own words below:

Dear Church of Our Savior,

My name is Derjanai Thomas (NaiNai) and I am going into my senior year!! I would like to thank you guys for all the support y’all gave me these last 3 years. I am very appreciative for it all. Once again thank you for the support.

Love, Derjanai Thomas

Dear Church of Our Savior,

My name is Pierre Joseph and this past year I completed my second year of college. I have been involved with UrbanPromise for many years, since I was in the first grade. I am the first from my entire family to attend college and I plan to be the first to graduate. I am very thankful for the scholarship I received going into my first year and all the support I’ve received since then. The church’s partnership with UrbanPromise has been nothing short of a blessing for many youths that UrbanPromise mentors. With this scholarship I was able to purchase more materials and books for the upcoming fall semester. Once again, I am thankful for the church’s generosity and continued support on my behalf as we as many others. With you consistent support many students are aided and can worry about one less issue. Thank you for your continued belief and support in me as I continue my studies.

Sincerely, Pierre Joseph

Dear Church of Our Savior,

I will keep pushing to continue to  further my education. Despite much loss over  the year and trials and tribulations I want to keep proving that I’m what what’s good that comes from Camden and continue to be that role model to the youth from Camden. I feel that going to school and being highly favored by God with much support it is all I have. My pastor told me  that if the devil has your mind he has you and by God’s blessing I won’t let him have me. I’ve worked hard to get where I am today overcoming so much. God keeps blessing me and the support I have keeps pushing me even when I don’t believe in myself. I made a promise to myself no matter how hard my future gets I will always fight for it. I know I am better and I know I have so much to prove. I will keep fighting through loss and me graduating will be my testimony. I thank you Church of Our Savior for all the support, prayers and love. I am so thankful for the help you all give me and it gives me hope. My major at King University is psychology and I minor in youth ministry. Classes can be a bit tough but God wouldn’t give me something I couldn’t handle. I have my downfalls but just as anyone else it’s because I’m human. I’m really excited to see what God has in store for my future. I’m anxious to know but good things come to those who wait. I am just as any other flower but not all bloom at the same time. I am patient so that when I do bloom it will be the prettiest one seen.

Sincerely, Nioshjah Lindsey
