The LCOS Book Group has selected James by Percival Everett for its next discussion. We will meet on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 6:30 PM in Room 112.
James is a novel that tells the story of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn but from the perspective of Jim, an escaped slave. Like Mark Twain’s novel, James demonstrates the humanity of the slaves and the cruelty of slavery. In a time when some are trying to distort the past and rewrite history, this novel is very important with its message for the Twenty-first Century. It has won the 2024 Kirkus Prize for Fiction and the 2024 National Book Award for Fiction. As Ann Patchett writes, “James is funny and horrifying, brilliant and riveting. In telling the story of Jim instead of Huck Finn, Percival Everett delivers a powerful, necessary corrective to both literature and history.”
