Mission Quilts Ministry

Mission Quilts Ministry

The quilting ministry is a continuation of the Working Arm group that has met at LCOS for many years (at least the since the ‘50s). The group meets 9:30-11:30 a.m. on the first and second Thursdays of each month at the church.

Lutheran World Relief (LWR) distributes quilts made by Lutherans and their community members to the neediest parts of the world, usually via the S.S. Hope which sails out of Baltimore, MD. We use donated fabrics which may include sheets, curtains, and the stash and/or scrap fabrics from sewers and quilters and any other possible source. Very simple construction methods are used and the meeting days usually become social events as well as work days.  After Hurricane Sandy there was a need for quilts in New Jersey and LCOS delivered 67 completed quilts for distribution at the shore.  Our production numbers vary each year.  While the number of quilters has dwindled over the years with fewer people knowing how to sew helpers are always welcome who can cut fabric in preparation for sewing and of course, those who can sew are always appreciated.  Instruction is provided so experience is not necessary. Contact the church at 856-429-5122 if interested in more details or just show up on the first or second Thursday of the month.
