Serve with Us

Christ-centered service is often transformational. It can change both the life of the one who serves as well as the person who is served.

Service connects with other practices of discipleship in the ELCA-wide Call to Discipleship: prayer, study, worship, invitation, encouragement, and giving. Prayer and study of Scripture are important as we turn to God for direction and guidance in the ways in which we are called to serve. Worship is a way to deepen our commitment to serve others and celebrate our blessings.

Service is a living witness to our faith that provides opportunities for us to invite others to learn more about Jesus. Through service, we encourage those who are struggling to go on and restore hope in their lives. Jesus says, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back” (Luke 6:38).

Social Ministry Committee

Social Ministry Committee extends Christian compassion and helpfulness to persons in need, primarily in our local community. The committee coordinates LCOS’s participation in a variety of benevolence projects throughout the year including organizations like Bridge of Peace, Caring Hearts, Interfaith Care Givers, and the LCOS Food Pantry. The committee is also responsible for allocating funds to the various organizations that we support. Individual committee members are responsible for coordinating specific projects/activities.

The committee meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (except July and August) at 7pm via Zoom.

Advent Giving Tree

The Advent Giving Tree is a holiday tradition where the congregation provides Christmas gifts to families in need. Church members select a tag from the Advent Giving Tree located in the Narthex from mid-November to early December, purchase, wrap and return requested gifts. An Advent Giving Online Registry is also available through the LCOS Website. The Advent Giving Tree provides gifts to children, teenagers, adults, and families through the following organizations: Urban Promise, My Father’s House, Caring Hearts Ministries, and the LCOS Pantry families. Monetary donations are also appreciated, donation envelopes are available in the narthex outside the sanctuary.

Bridge of Peace

Bridge of Peace Lutheran Church is a multi-cultural, multiracial, multi-lingual ELCA congregation in the Fairview Section of Camden (2755 Tuckahoe Rd). It is a mission partner of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior.

Bridge of Peace reflects Jesus Christ in our community by:

  • Feeding those who are hungry through the Peace Center Food Pantry.
  • Providing youth education programs and meals for hungry children, through the Youth Group and Vacation Bible School.
  • Worshiping our Lord and Savior each Sunday at 10AM in-person or on Zoom.
Caring Hearts

Caring Hearts Ministry

Caring Hearts Ministry is a non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance and support to children and families struggling with HIV/AIDS in southern New Jersey that are seen by Cooper Hospital’s Pediatric Infectious Disease Practice. LCOS assists Caring Hearts families by providing collected items, ex: socks, deodorant, bars of soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, throughout the year. We support the seasonal holiday parties by providing baked goods, refreshments, and assistance at the parties. We provide wrapped gifts and/or gift cards from the LCOS Advent Giving Tree which are given out at the Holiday Party in December. LCOS supports Caring Hearts with a monetary donation once a year and a special Christmas donation.

Mission Quilts

Mission Quilts Ministry

Quilt Ministry is a continuation of the Working Arm group that has been meeting at LCOS for many years (at least since the ‘50s). Lutheran World Relief (LWR) distributes quilts made by Lutherans and their community members to the neediest parts of the world, usually via the S.S. Hope which sails out of Baltimore, MD. After Hurricane Sandy there was a need for quilts in New Jersey and LCOS delivered 67 completed quilts for distribution at the shore.

We use donated fabrics which may include sheets, curtains, and any large fabric remnants from sewers and quilters and other possible sources. Very simple construction methods are used, and the meeting days usually become social events as well as work days. While those who know how to sew or cut fabric in preparation for sewing are always appreciated, instruction is provided so those with little or no experience are welcome too. The group meets 9:30-11:30 a.m. on the first and second Thursdays of each month at the church.
